Do You Know a Place Called Half Blood?
I've always been a Greek mythology fan, so when I went to the movies to see the not-so good book to movie adaptation of The Lightning Thief (First book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians saga) I got hooked to this story and wanted to know more about it, eventually I bought the book and got fascinated by it. "Look. I didn't want to be a Half-Blood... If you're a normal kid and you're reading this because you think it's fiction, great. Read on. I envy you for being able to believe none of this ever happened" This are some of the very first words you read at the beginning of the book, and I appreciate that the author takes time to make us believe this was real. I think it's part of creating the world and the magic, of wrapping you around the story. Obviously, this book is for kids so the author is just trying to make us think this world really exists. Because this is a book for kids it has more innocent jokes but they're so funny, I can say that is one the things that wrapped my concentration when I started reading this book.
I have to say that the author made this book a learning experience, if you are not a kid and can appreciate other aspects beside the story, you will notice that the author really knows how to explain the Greek world and that he knows what he's talking about. This is a perfect book to get to know this mythology because it is not dull, at all. I really liked how he explained various myths while building memorable characters and an incredible world. I could not put this book down, and didn't get bored at any time.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is the first book in a five-book series, and tells the story of a twelve year old boy named Percy, who lives in New York and is about to be expelled from expelled from boarding school again, soon he discovers who his real father is and why life has been so hard for him, most of all he finds out that Mount Olympus is real, Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen and he is the prime suspect. "Go on with what your heart tells you, or you will lose all.” I relate to this because I used to do everything in a rational way, never following what my heart said, I had to find the hard way that there are time you have to follow whatever your heart tells you to do.
In this part, Percy has to decide what to do, to follow his heart or follow the rules that apply to demigods.
I have to say that this series ended a long time, people grew up with them like Harry Potter, so I'm not proud that until now I've started reading them but I'm on book four and so far I've enjoyed them all. These books are know to have a prophecy each. "You will fail to save the one you love the most" When I reached this part, it destroyed me which I liked, Riordan did something I had never read before, he turned the story upside down and didn't follow a cliché where the main character has to sacrifice himself which I expected. I loved that. My favorite character was Percy, which over the next two books it changed twice, I connected to him because there were times in my life when I felt misunderstood and didn't comprehend what or why things were happening to me. “A god is giving you an opportunity to prove yourself, Percy Jackson. Will you prove yourself a coward?” We all can relate with this quote because sometimes we feel the pressure of our friends to do or say something to prove ourselves which may not be our truly selves. I connected many times with this book because of situations that had happened on the past or that were happening on present time.
I read this book on summer and didn't regret spending my time with it, I liked it so much that I re-read it on September and moved on with the story which I'm liking so much so far.
